this cake is already late by a few days from the actual birthday and i'm really sorry about that. ampuuun ya nadiah!

this cake was actually inspired from a cake in my dessert book, decadent desserts. i had wanted to make that particular cake for the glandore open house on hari raya but well, something went wrong and i ended up with a totally different cake. i made a note to myself that i would someday try my hands at making that cake again and so yesterday i did, finally.

the cake turned out pretty well i guess. but actually, i didn't use the recipe from decadent desserts this time. instead, i searched for a simple white cake recipe, tweaked it a little (very little), and tried to decorate the cake similar to what i see in the book. i played with some white chocs (which turned out to be really fun!) and well, i used buttercream for the frosting.

the little dark-chocolate-coloured-dot-thingy (hahha) in the middle of the cake is actually a white chocolate bit if you have noticed. because i was too lazy to melt another batch of chocolates just for that teenee-tiny dot so i just dabbed some cocoa powder onto the white choc. however, take note that you should be extra careful while holding the choc bits in your hands because they tend to melt really easily, especially white chocs. well, the little dark-chocolate-coloured-dot-thingy (hahha) was actually supposed to be heart-shaped you know...

oh, that pink ribbon around the cake was a real ribbon, nothing edible oke. i guess the cake is a little comot and messy but then again, i will still give myself a pat on the back lah cuz i did manage to make the cake despite it being all messy. hey, it was my first time kottt >___<
oke oke, let's just get to the recipes shall we?
white cake with a twist of orange+buttercream frosting+white chocs ♥
cake
ingredients
- 1 cup sugar
- 1/2 cup butter
- 2 egg whites
- 2 tsp vanilla essence
- 1 1/2 cup flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1/2 cup milk
- 1/2 cup orange juice
how to
- beat butter and sugar until fluffy. beat in egg whites one at a time, beating well after each addition then stir in the vanilla essence.
- combine flour and baking powder, add to the creamed mixture and mix well.
- stir in the milk until batter is smooth and finally stir in the orange juice.
- pour batter into greased pan and bake in a preheated oven at 175 C for 30-40 minutes or until the sides of cake detach from the pan. cake is done when it springs back to the touch.
- leave to cool.
buttercream frosting
ingredients
- butter (melted at room temperature)
- icing sugar
- vanilla essence
how to
- beat butter until fluffy and add in icing sugar (to your taste). beat well.
- stir in vanilla essence and keep on creaming the mixture until it turns a whitish colour.
white chocolate sides
ingredients
- cooking white chocolate bars
how to
- melt white chocolate bars using the double boiler method and pour onto a well-greased baking sheet (i just used plain A4 paper and it worked just well). spread the melted choc well and let it cool.
- using a hot knife, cut out equally sized (mine were not!) straight bars to decorate the edge of the cake. careful when handling the chocolate as it melts really easily and you wouldn't want your hand to be all messy with choc smears.
assembling
- when the cake is cooled, cut it into two halves and spread some of the buttercream mixture onto one half of the cake and top it up with the other half, with the buttercream in between the two halves of the cake. frost the whole cake with the rest of the buttercream mixture.
- arrange the white chocolate bars from above around the edges of the cake.
- decorate the top of the cake to your liking. you can cut the white choc out into shapes and place it onto the frosted cake.
there. but i'm not really good at giving instructions though. haha. sorry about that. i'll improve i'll improve. as i've used a smaller pan, i halved the ingredients ratio.
